Boris Johnson visits Ukraine on a surprise visit

10 Apr 2022: Ukraine's leader says while the Russian threat to the capital Kyiv has receded, it is rising in the east. Civilians remaining in Bucha are lining up for food donated by the local church in the battered Kyiv suburb where Ukrainian forces and journalists reported evidence of war crimes after Russian soldiers withdrew.

The death toll from the train station bombing in Kramatorsk rises to 52.

  • Russia denies responsibility saying missiles responsible for the attack were only used by Ukraine’s military.
  • Ukraine says more than 4,500 people have been evacuated from Ukrainian cities through humanitarian corridors.
  • Russian shelling killed five civilians and wounded five others in two east Ukrainian cities, an official says.
  • YouTube has blocked Duma TV broadcasts from Russia’s lower house of parliament.

Volunteer Petro Denysyuk told The Associated Press that he and fellow church friends started providing food, with a wide array of basic foodstuffs and hot meals.

“We have gathered together with the youth from our church and prepared food for the needy,” Denysyuk said. “We prepared pilaf, boiled eggs, prepared meat, sausages, noodles.”

Boris Johnson visits Ukraine on a surprise visit

Standing alongside the Ukrainian President was UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson who made a surprise trip to the war-torn country this weekend. President Zelenskyy has been supportive of foreign leaders visiting the country as the invasion continues as a sign of strength in the face of Russian aggression.

For security reasons, the trip was not announced by the office of the Prime Minister. However, since his arrival spokespeople from 10 Downing Street have said that the visit represents a "show of solidarity" to the Ukrainian people. While in Kyiv, PM Johnson said "I made clear today that the United Kingdom stands unwaveringly with them in this ongoing fight, and we are in it for the long run."

Detailing what he planned to do to support the country when he returned, he said that the British will step "up our own military and economic support and convening a global alliance to bring this tragedy to an end, and ensure Ukraine survives and thrives as a free and sovereign nation."
